In July 2015, President Obama received this gift from Mulatu Teshome Wirtu during his trip to Ethiopia. This was the first visit by a sitting American president to Ethiopia, a U.S. security ally. The sterling silver shield in traditional Ethiopian style has filigree designs. Crossed behind the shield are Ethiopian style weapons, a spear and shotel (curved sword). The back of the shield is engraved "From H.E. Dr. Mulatu Teshome Wirtu President of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia to H.E. Mr. Barack Obama President of the United States of America July 2015.”

This plate was given to President Obama in 2016 by Cuban President Raúl Castro Ruz to mark the historic occasion of the first visit of a U.S. President to Cuba since 1928. The drawing on the interior of the black and tan ceramic plate was designed by renowned Cuban artist Eduardo “Choco” Roca.
